Hallo Alle,
Jetzt bin ich in Hamburg gelandet, mal sehen was hier loss ist. Or, for all you english-speaking folk, I'm now in Hamburg, blitzed through the city (unfortuneatly rained upon) and met two extremely boho-cool swiss guys who were sitting beside me on the train. I could tell they were Swiss by the awsomely accented "Schweizer-Deutsch" (which I admittedl understood very little of) and we got chatting (once I worked up the guts to instigate awkward train conversation). The end result, a phone number and a place to stay near Zurich. Cool.
Sidenote: parents, don't freak out about my potentially staying w. strange men in strange countries. Everything is just fine, trust me (would this face ever lie to you?)
So, whats next? Well, tomrrow morn. I'm off to Copenhagen (to more rain), where after spending the day bumming around, seeing the sites, I'm off to the City Public Hostel for a rather public seeming night of fun. (Again, parents, when I say fun, I mean good clean fun!). Then more Copenhagen on Sun. till around 6pm-ish when I'll hop on the night train to Amsterdam via Hamburg and Brussels. Two nights there (in two different hostels, to get a well-rounded sampling), one night at "Bob's Youth Hostel" (Good central location, clean seeming, cheap AND complete w. bar and attached club) and then one night in the "Heart of Amsterdam" (which is actually in the HEART of Amsterdam, that is to say, the Red Light District. Yup, that's right, I'm living it on the edge. Again, sidenote...I should mention its the safer end of the Red Light District, no prostitution necessary)
I also met these two other Canadian backpackers in the Frankfurt Hbf (Hauptbahnhof, or central train station), who'd already been on the road 11 days in the places I'm heading to..we got to what I deem to be standard backpacker chit-chat. Example, "had anything stolen?" or "best bar you've been in so far?" and the ever popular "but HOW do you manage to carry the backpack hungover?". My consolation, they've met a couple other single female backpackers who were faring rather well on the road, you just gotta be open. Clearly, I am that (you all know and love my sociable nature I'm sure).
PS - I've finally included a photo, Margrit and I in the Idstein train station just before departure. Cheerio,
Petra
